The real cost of owning and operating a strapping machine

The total cost of a strapping machine can be found by adding the machine price, plus shipping, installation cost if it applies, and sales tax if applicable. However, there are two more costs that most people don’t consider before buying:

  • Service / Maintenance Costs
  • Strapping Cost

Service and maintenance costs are difficult to compare without good data from many manufacturers and users, but we can look at the price of the strapping to get a clearer picture of the true costs of owning and operating a strapping machine.

Most manufacturers build their strapping machines to run their own strapping for a couple of reasons. Strapping is a good source of reoccurring revenue and the machines typically perform better when the strapping is made for their specific machine. We’ve tried running other brands of strap on some machines and the results weren’t great. So you must know the price of strapping you’ll run on the machine before you buy. If you don’t, your true cost could end up a lot higher than you think.

We sell a brand of clear 5 mm strapping designed for a higher-end strapping machine. The strapping machine is popular with higher volume customers because of its dependability and performance. In addition to this, the manufacturer makes low-cost strapping that helps offset the higher initial investment in the machine. So a machine like this makes sense for someone using a strapping machine throughout the day.

To demonstrate how the price of strapping can matter in your business, I did a comparison and charted the results below. I found four sources for clear strapping online. The EAM Mosca clear 5 mm strapping we sell is at the bottom of the chart.

If you are buying a couple of rolls a strap a year, the extra $15 or more a roll isn’t going to do much to the bottom line. However, if you’re using your strapping machine every day (and have more than one strapping machine) then the cost difference starts to add up quickly.

We used the hypothetical numbers below to determine the cost of the strapping:

Average bundles / hour: 40 x 8 hours = 320 bundles / day

Average length of strap used in bundling: 4-feet

320 bundles x 4-feet = 1,280 feet / day

What does your strapping cost look like now on a daily and weekly basis?

As you can see above, even the closest competitor (Source #4) would cost you an extra $10.24 a week more. The highest priced source (#2) would cost you an extra $53.76 a week! In this example, someone would be spending an extra $2,795.52 a year for strapping.
